MOVIE MINI-REVIEW: “Neither the Sea nor the Sand” (aka “The Exorcism of Hugh”, 1972)

” Neither the sea nor the sand could kill their love nor the wind in envy blow it away.”
“That sounds like a Dan Fogleberg lyric.”

This flick was made from the book of the same name written by Gordon Honeycombe, proving once again that everyone has a novel lurking in them (be it good or bad — The Twilight series is proof of this).  Anna is a discontented wife who runs off to the Isle of Jersey to find herself.  There, she falls in love with lighthouse keeper Hugh, as one does when one runs off to a channel island.  Hugh and Anna celebrate their love by running off to Scotland to run about with wild abandon on the beach, where Hugh DFOs and dies.  Perhaps.  The rest of the movie is as wacky and melodramatic as the early ’70s DeVol soundtrack used throughout the movie with just as much wild abandon.   In the end, love doesn’t exactly trump Death, but it does bring about the heartbreak of zombification.
